Supa Speed Could Start Historic Double for Flying Dutchmen

West Coast invader Supa Speed could launch a huge two days for Travis Boersma’s Flying Dutchmen stable when she goes postward in Monday’s 88th running of the $750,000 Central Bank Ashland (G1) going 1 1/16 miles on the dirt.

Boersma will be represented Tuesday by Owen Almighty in the 101st running of the $1.25 million Toyota Blue Grass (G1).

The only owner to win both races in the same year is Calumet Farm, which in 1948 raced Bewitch to win the Ashland and Coaltown to take the Blue Grass.

Trained by John Sadler, Supa Speed made her first five starts on grass.

“As a 2-year-old, she was not really training that great on the dirt,” Sadler assistant Juan Leyva said Saturday morning, “We put her on the grass and she won, so we kept her on it.

“At 3, we had it in the back of our minds to give her another chance on the dirt and she really took to it.”

In her main track debut that came March 2 in the Santa Ysabel (G3), Supa Speed was beaten a nose by the highly regarded Maysam going 1 1/16 miles.

Instead of staying at home for this afternoon’s Santa Anita Oaks (G2), Supa Speed has made the trip to Keeneland and might encounter less than fast conditions.

“She’s by Justify, so she should be able to handle an off track,” Leyva said.
