Defending Champion Raging Sea Tops Baird Doubledogdare Nominations

Alpha Delta Stables’ Raging Sea, runner-up to 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Del Mar in her most recent start, headlines a roster of 21 fillies and mares nominated to the 30th running of the $350,000 Baird Doubledogdare (G3) to be contested Friday, April 18.

Trained by Chad Brown, the five-time graded stakes winner won the Baird Doubledogdare last spring and could become the first runner to win the 1 1/16-mile race in consecutive years.

Also nominated for Brown is Klaravich Stables’ two-time Grade 1 winner Randomized.

Other marquee names among the nominations are Grade 1 winners Candied, owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Bobby Flay, and George Krikorian’s champion Just F Y I.

Trained by five-time Baird Doubledogdare winner Todd Pletcher, Candied won the 2023 Darley Alcibiades (G1) here and was third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Just F Y I, winner of the 2023 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and runner-up in last year’s Central Bank Ashland (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1), is trained by Bill Mott.

Two other graded stakes will be held on Saturday, April 19: the 94th running of the $350,000 Ben Ali (G3) going 1 3/16 miles on the dirt for 4-year-olds and up and the 40th running of the $400,000 VisitLEX Elkhorn (G2) for 4-year-olds and up at 1½ miles on the grass.

Heading the 24 nominees for the Ben Ali is Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Walmac Farm’s Locked. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Locked won the 2023 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) here and most recently was an 8½-length winner of the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) Presented by Yaamava’ Resort & Casino.

The VisitLEX Elkhorn attracted 25 nominees headed by Little Red Feather Racing, Sterling Stables and Marsha Naify’s six-time graded stakes winner Gold Phoenix (IRE). Trained by Phil D’Amato, Gold Phoenix has earned nearly $1.8 million and concluded his 2024 campaign with a fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) at Del Mar.
