The idea was to strike while the iron was hot, and Choisya (GB) did just that Saturday afternoon when she won the Jenny Wiley (G1) going a mile and a sixteenth on the grass.
“She really took to everything the two weeks she’s been here, and she’s very happy,” said John Clarke, assistant to trainer Simon Crisford.
Now a 5-year-old, Choisya brought a two-race win streak from Grade 2 events in Dubai to Keeneland.
“She is a filly on the improve and when they are improving like that, just leave them alone and let them go about their business,” Clarke said.
In the Jenny Wiley, Choisya received a ground-saving trip from Luis Saez. She made the lead at the top of the stretch and held off a late bid from favored Excellent Truth (IRE) to prevail by a half-length.
“She got the perfect trip and did everything right,” Clarke said.
Choisya is scheduled to fly back to England Monday night.
“She will probably get a little break and the plan is to come back for the race at Saratoga,” Clarke said.
Co-trainer Ed Crisford told the New York Racing Association media team that Choisya will point to the one-mile $500,000 Just a Game (G1) on Friday, June 6 during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga. The Jenny Wiley offered a fees-waived berth into the Just a Game.
In her start prior to the Jenny Wiley, Choisya handled the 1⅛-mile distance with a victory in the Balanchine (G2) Presented by DP World in which she defeated Cinderella’s Dream (GB), runner-up in last fall’s Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) at Del Mar.
